What are Millets/Ragi?

Finger Millet, also known as Ragi is an important millet grown extensively in various regions of India and Africa. Its scientific name is Eleusine coracana.

It ranks sixth in production after wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, and bajra in India. In India, ragi (finger millet) is mostly grown and consumed in Karnataka.

And, to a limited extent in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and Goa.

It has different names in local languages. In India's finger millet is commonly called by various names like ragi (in Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi), also Mandua/Mangal in Hindi,  Kodra (Himachal Pradesh), Mandia (Oriya), Taidalu (in Telangana region), Kezhvaragu in Tamil, etc.

Finger Millet is commonly known as Ragi. It has become a part of the diet in most households in India due to its impressive nutritional value. Its value can’t be understood until you take it regularly.

It was always considered poor man’s food but now it is accepted by people living in urban areas. I will say millet value addition technologies have contributed a lot in bringing back to our plate. It has gained popularity among farmers because it is easy to grow and process as compared to other millets.

If you are unaware of the benefits of including Ragi in your diet, we have reasons for why you most certainly should.

1) Holistic Breakfast Food

Ragi comprises a vast array of key nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin E, B-complex vitamins, iron, calcium, antioxidants, proteins, fibers, sufficient calories, and useful unsaturated fats.

Following a deep sleep at night, the stomach and intestines display peak levels of metabolism in the morning. Hence, having ragi-based foods like ragi upma or ragi parathas for breakfast activates the digestive juices and ensures complete assimilation of nutrients found in ragi.

Which are absorbed into the bloodstream and transferred to vital organs in the body namely the heart, brain, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

2) Supplies Essential Amino Acids

Ragi is composed of certain key amino acids, making it a unique plant-based source of high-quality proteins. It offers methionine, a sulfur-based amino acid to revive skin and hair health, valine and isoleucine which repair injured muscle tissues, and threonine, to enable the proper formation of teeth and enamel and protect the mouth from gum disease.

3) Fortifies Bone Density

Finger millet, being a fantastic source of natural calcium, strengthens bones in growing children. It also restores optimum bone density in older people, assisting in alleviating osteoporosis symptoms. While younger people can consume ragi daily, middle-aged and older adults need to eat measured servings of ragi, to augment bone health, while steering clear of gastrointestinal and kidney disorders.

4) Keeps Blood Sugar Levels In Check

Finger millet, although high in calories and carbohydrates for instant energy, also comprises a plethora of phytates, tannins, polyphenols – plant chemicals that slow down the digestion process. This lowers high blood sugar in those with diabetes mellitus, making ragi a valuable addition to a diet for diabetes. Also, owing to its low digestibility and rich fiber content, ragi is the top food of choice for adults, for accelerating weight loss and managing other lifestyle diseases like diabetes and obesity.

5) Strengthening bones -

When compared to other millet grains, ragi is considered to be one of the best non-dairy sources of calcium with 344 mg of the mineral in 100 grams of ragi.

Calcium is an essential mineral required for keeping your bones and teeth healthy and strong, thereby preventing the onset of osteoporosis in adults. The calcium content is one of the reasons why growing children are fed ragi porridge.

6) Manages diabetes

The millet comprising the seed coat (testa) is packed full of polyphenols and dietary fiber. Ragi is known to treat diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia, resulting from insufficient insulin secretion. Being a low-glycemic index food, it helps in keeping your blood sugar levels stable. So, diabetic patients who incorporate ragi into their daily diet have a low glycemic response.

7) Prevents obesity The high dietary fiber content in ragi prevents you from overeating and keeps your stomach full for a longer period of time. It also contains the amino acid tryptophan which functions as an appetite suppressant and is effective in losing weight. So, substitute wheat and rice for ragi to prevent obesity.

8) Boosts heart health Ragi flour contains a good amount of magnesium and potassium. Magnesium helps to maintain a normal heartbeat and nerve function whereas, potassium aids in the proper functioning of the heart muscles and lowers the risk of atherosclerosis. On the other hand, the fiber content and the amino acid threonine prevent the accumulation of fat in the liver and lower the overall cholesterol in the body.

9) Provides energy As ragi has a good amount of carbohydrates, protein, and unsaturated fat, it will help fuel your body and brain. Ragi can be eaten as a pre/post-workout food or if you have been experiencing fatigue, a bowl of ragi will rev up your energy levels instantly. It also improves your athletic performance helping you build your endurance level. Ragi is also known to help the body relax naturally due to the tryptophan content thus reducing anxiety, headache, and depression.

10) Prevents chronic diseases The polyphenol antioxidants in ragi help in fighting the body against chronic diseases and infections. The antioxidants prevent the healthy cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. These free radicals are known to trigger and alter lipids, protein, and DNA giving rise to a number of diseases including cancer, heart disease, etc.
